Welcome to Canton

Nestled in the heart of Mississippi, Canton is a charming small city with a big story. Now a proud NTC member, Canton invites travelers to explore its storied courthouse square, beloved flea market tradition, rich Civil Rights legacy and surprising Hollywood history, all within the warmth of authentic Southern hospitality.

Why Visit Canton

Canton’s historic Madison County Courthouse, built in 1855, is one of only seven pre-Civil War courthouses in Mississippi that remains in unaltered condition. Twice a year, the square carries on the beloved tradition of the Canton Flea Market Arts & Crafts Show, drawing up to 100,000 visitors from across the country. Film lovers will recognize Canton as the backdrop for A Time to Kill, My Dog Skip, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?

For those tracing America’s Civil Rights story, Canton is essential. The Canton Freedom House Civil Rights Museum, the only CORE Freedom House still standing in Mississippi, served as a refuge for Martin Luther King Jr. and a base for Freedom Summer organizers. It was here that Annie Devine helped found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964, a movement that led directly to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
