Ridgeland was one of many cities we visited on our

Ridgeland was one of many cities we visited on our nine-day trip along the Natchez Trace Parkway section of Mississippi, and we loved the outdoor focus of this tree city, particularly during a time when we’re prioritizing being out instead of in.

While driving around the 33,000-acre Ross Barnett Reservoir, Scott spotted this wildlife viewing stand where we camped out for awhile and watched the birds. Then, we ventured even further into the abyss and drove through Pearl River State wildlife area only to see not one but FIVE gators. 🐊#repost @lunaticatlarge #visitridgeland #visitridgelandresponsibly #thenatcheztrace

We’ve been working with the Natchez Trace Compact for the last year to tell the stories of this legendary stretch of national park that runs from Middle Tennessee all the way down to the Mississippi-Louisiana border, and we just finally arrived at the Southern Terminus in Natchez, Mississippi last night! 🙌🏻

There are sunsets and then there are SUNSETS. Natchez falls into the latter category. Third night here, third time seeing the sky ablaze. What a pretty time of year to visit this city, which is abiding by a mask mandate and social distancing and makes me wish everyone were taking it this seriously back home. 💛 #VisitMSResponsibly #VisitNatchezResponsibly

We had such a warm (masked) welcome in Clinton! The city communications director, Mayor Fisher, tourism director, and Main Street team were so kind to give up their 24 hours and make sure we learned everything there is to know about this 20,000-person town just 11 miles west of Jackson right on @thenatcheztrace, including a golf cart tour by the city historian (who was also the former mayor and a state politician). Some highlights:

-The town is anchored by Mississippi College (established 1826), which became the first university to give degrees to women in 1831.

-It was the home to the Clinton Riots of 1875, which ended Reconstruction in the area. There’s a historical marker where the massacre occurred and an interpretative area is underway.

-Clinton boasts a sweet Main Street district lined with brick streets and mixed-use buildings, and I can just tell a major revitalization is coming.

-There’s a slick free walking tour available on the city site that steers visitors to all the big points of interest in town.

-Golf carts are street legal!

-So are to-go cups in the downtown district. We grabbed cocktails and pizza from @thebankbypizzashack and had a picnic down at the park.

-There’s free WiFi in most of the parks, and all city parks will have it at the end of the year.

This is a town definitely worth a stop over as you travel down the Trace! 🚲

Yesterday, we drove from Tennessee down the Natchez Trace Parkway to @frenchcamphistoricvillage, where we stayed for the night, and on today to @visitridgelandms, where we’re hanging out through the weekend. Want a place with space and hardly any people at all, minus some scattered cyclists? @thenatcheztrace is the fall trip for you!

It’s still pretty green down here in central Mississippi—and an absolutely perfect and crisp 70 degrees—but the leaves start to turn the more northern you go on the Trace. #NTPxCC
