August on the Trace: Events to Close Out Summer
As summer begins to wind down, August offers one last opportunity to hit the road before school schedules and fall routines return. Along the Natchez Trace Parkway, the
final weeks of summer are filled with community celebrations, live music, outdoor entertainment, and hometown festivals that make every stop along the Trace feel like a destination.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a leisurely drive, here are a few ways to celebrate the season before autumn arrives.
Williamson County Fair – Franklin, Tennessee
At the Parkway’s northern point, Franklin throws one of the region’s biggest late-summer celebrations. The Williamson County Fair runs August 7–15 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park, bringing nine days of carnival rides, live music, food, and competitions celebrating the area’s agricultural roots. It’s the perfect capstone to a drive up the Trace – spend the day exploring the Parkway’s northern stretch, then wrap up the evening with funnel cake and a Ferris wheel view of Middle Tennessee.
Elvis Presley Birthplace Fan Appreciation Day – Tupelo, Mississippi
Fan Appreciation Day returns to the Elvis Presley Birthplace on Saturday, August 8, 2026. It’s a quieter, more personal counterpart to June’s Elvis Festival, built around special guest conversations, live music from Dawson Horn, and free tours of the Birthplace house. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, there’s nothing quite like standing where the story began. Pair it with a stroll through Downtown Tupelo, where live music regularly spills out of local restaurants and bars on summer evenings.
Movies on the Trace – Tupelo, Mississippi
Settle in under the stars for the Natchez Trace Parkway’s outdoor movie series in Tupelo. Bring a blanket, pick out your favorite spot on the grass, and take in a movie framed by Southern pines, perfect for anyone who loves summer nights outside with
family and friends. The evening kicks off with a short 15–20 minute ranger program before the film, and admission is free. You’ll find everyone posted up on the lawn outside the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center, so bring snacks if you want ’em, and remember to practice Leave No Trace Principles and pick up after yourselves.
This August brings two screenings, both starting at 7:30 p.m.: FernGully (1992) on August 8 and Yogi Bear (2010) on August 22, easy, family-friendly picks to close out the summer.
Summer Porch Party Series – Ridgeland, Mississippi
For a more refined evening, the Summer Porch Party Series returns to the Waller Craft Center in Ridgeland on Thursday, August 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Gather your friends for an exclusive wine tasting paired with live jazz, while craftsman Nic Neese demonstrates his glass-blowing skills. Jay Hunter and Chris Berry will pour reds and whites from the J. Lohr vineyard, and Sarah Fey Brown rounds things out with bubbles and charcuterie to match. Admission is $50, and seating is limited to just 45 people, so tickets tend to go quickly. The event is held at 950 Rice Road, Ridgeland, MS 39157, and moves indoors if it rains.
SkyDog: The Shoals Experience – Florence, Alabama
In Alabama, SkyDog: The Shoals Experience debuts August 28–30 at the Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa, right along the Alabama stretch of the Trace. Inspired by Duane Allman’s nickname from his time recording in The Shoals, it’s an
immersive weekend built around Muscle Shoals’ legacy as one of music’s most influential recording communities, with live performances against a Wilson Dam backdrop, late-night sessions, and storytelling from the players who helped shape the
sound. A fitting way to send off summer, in the place where so much of it was born.
