Julep’s Restaurant

Most travelers like to venture out to local restaurants when they reach their destination, but you might want to reconsider that when it comes to Julep’s Restaurant of the Natchez Eola Hotel.  The Catfish Eola is their signature Entree, and it’s the crawfish stuffing that gives the dish it’s identity.  And if you like crawfish, they can fry up a plate of tails for you to enjoy as an appetizer while you await your meal.

The dining room is very nicely appointed and has a view of the courtyard.  At night, the bartender set the fountain in the courtyard ablaze to make the atmosphere even more enchanting.  You can dine in the courtyard during pleasant weather, or dinner can be served in the Peacock Lounge while you’re enjoying sports on one of their wide screen televisions.

Jughead’s Fish Fry

Jughead’s Fish Fry

Family traditions are a staple in the Natchez area, and when it comes to food, they bare even more weight. Jughead’s does just that. Their current location is relatively new, especially when you consider that the current owner’s grandfather closed the original Jughead’s about twenty-five years back.  The great thing though, is that the family recipes have all been handed down, and they bring back memories to the locals who used to drive over twenty miles to the original restaurant.  It was located inside the levee toward the Mississippi River, South of Vidalia, Louisiana, and you knew to go there hungry because you’d be treated to all you could eat.

Fried shrimp, oysters, catfish, and pickles are the popluar dishes among locals, but you’ll want to ask for extra hushpuppies because that’s their specialty.  Don’t try asking for their hushpuppy recipe because the most you’ll get out of them is a sly grin.

Fat Mama’s Tamales

Fat Mama’s Tamales is another local favorite and the atmosphere is as festive as the food.  Their signature entree is their great tamales, but feel free to toss in a link of boudin (pronounce boo-dan) or some fire and ice pickles to spice up your Fat Mama’s dining experience just a tad more.  There is a large interior dining room that’s heated and cooled, but if the weather is nice you’ll have to fight for a table out on the shaded deck. Fat Mama’s is within walking distance of downtown hotels and bed and breakfasts, as well as being just a few blocks from the Hampton Inn and Isle of Capri hotel.  You may want to be within walking distance if you indulge in a couple of their famous “Knock-You-Naked” (pronounced neck-ed) Margaritas.  They are frozen and delicious!

El Potro Restaurant Grill

El Potro is situated on the outskirts of town, but you won’t mind the short drive to indulge in the fare of this locally popular Mexican restaurant. There is strong competition between the several “South of the Border” establishments located in Natchez, and locals will argue as to which is best. Those in favor of El Potro, claim their dishes have the freshest ingredients, and the portions are larger than that of their competitors.  Just make sure you bring a big appetite with you when you head to El Potro because you won’t walk away hungry.

E and T’s Bar-B-Que

E and T’s Bar-B-Que

E and T Bar-B-Que is a little out of the way if you’re staying downtown, and most locals order “to go” since there aren’t many tables in the restaurant.  There is always argument between locals as to who serves up the best burger in town, and E and T’s “Big Agnes” is high on a lot of folks list.  E and T’s ribs, chicken and catfish are hard to beat too; it’s been said that the meat just about falls off the bone their ribs are so tender, and the sides dishes of potato salad and cole slaw add a nice compliment to any order.

The restaurant is located in the Tracetown Shopping Center at the Highway 61-84 intersection across from Natchez Regional Medical Center, and you’ll have to wind your way all the way into the back corner to find it; but it will be worth the search.

The Donut Shop

Even if you are staying at a full service hotel or a bed and breakfast in Natchez, you somehow have to make your way to the Donut Shop. Now it may not sound like much, but when you sink your teeth into one of their sugary sensations, you’ll know you’ve discovered something special. And if you don’t manage to get by there early enough for donuts, you can indulge in an order of succulent tamales. They make their shucks from scratch and they are some kind of good. People have asked why we list them on our website, and we just think it would be crazy to not let everyone know about one of Natchez’ best kept secrets.

Doc Biglove’s

Fortunately, for those who enjoy the Natchez nightlife, Doc Big Love’s offers a late night menu for those who might feel some hunger pangs long after other restaurants have closed.  Doc’s is primarily a bar, and you can cut a rug or two if you’re order isn’t ready when you arrive (if you phone it in that is), or if you order when you get there.  There is an area where you can dine-in, but they’ll be happy to box it up for you if you want to take it back to your room.  Their burgers are awesome, and huge, and you’ve just got to compliment your burger with an order of their gigantic, beer-battered onion rings.

Doc’s is located on Main Street, convenient to all downtown hotels, and they serve on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Cock Of The Walk Restaurant

Cock Of The Walk Restaurant

Just about everyone that comes to Natchez asks the question, “where can we get some real southern cooking?”  One of the most common answers is, “The Cock-of-the-Walk”.  The restaurant serves up fried just about everything, but the house specialty is fried catfish.  The catfish is farm raised, most likely in the Mississippi Delta, and you can get a whole platter of it mixed with fries and cornbread hushpuppies that you probably won’t be able to finish.  When your waiter brings your cornbread out of the kitchen, it’s going to arrive in the skillet in which it was cooked so you know it’s piping hot.  They are highly skilled professionals too, in that before they divide your cornbread into servable portions, they want to show off how they can flip it into the air and catch it in the skillet again.  It’s truly an amazing feat, and once you finally get to dig in, you’ll be licking your lips at how good it is.

The Cock-of-the-Walk is located in the old passenger train station on the bluff, and is within walking distance of downtown hotels and b&b’s.  If you want to know how the restaurant got it’s name, well you’ll just have to go there and read all about it on your placemat.

Breaud’s Seafood & Steaks

Breaud’s is located in the heart of downtown and offers a great seafood and steak menu. Owner Glen Breaud brings his South Louisiana roots to Natchez so just about everything on the menu has a touch of cajun kick. The steaks are thick, tender, and juicy; just like you’d cook them at home.  There is a full bar and a few seats available for those just stopping in for a cocktail, and the dining setting is intimate and friendly.

The staff is great and it’s truly a local favorite gathering place. They’re open for lunch and dinner, and one of the few restaurants that is open on Sunday; but only for dinner from 3:30 til 9:00 p.m.

Bellemont Shake Shop

It may not take you back to the days of car hops and rock-n-roll, but the Bellemont Shake Shop will conjure up memories of drive-ins from the 50’s. Some locals would take a strong stance and argue that the Bellemont serves the best burger in town, and maybe so, but you can count on it being one of the best you ever tasted, especially if you’ve eaten just about all the Mickey D’s burgers along your travels you can consume. It’s a fun place to go, and you will certainly enjoy the nostalgia that will be served up with whatever you order from their extensive menu. They’re only open for lunch, so head out around mid-day so you don’t miss a classic Natchez dining experience.

1818 at Monmouth Plantation

1818 is located in the parlors of Monmouth Plantation and offers an ala carte menu to its patrons. Guests staying at the Inn primarily dine in the main dining room where a fixed menu with three entrees are available as part of a five course meal. Both dining setups are serviced by the same kitchen by the skilled hands of Chef Scott Varnadoe. Scott’s early exposure to food and cooking came through his parents, both accomplished cooks, and influential on Scott and his brother, Todd, an executive chef in Cornwall, England. It was in Baton Rouge, at White Oak Plantation, that Chef Varnedoe learned the basics of managing a kitchen under one of his role models, Chef John Folse. The menu of 1818 offers an array of entrees which include duck, beef, and seafood, and each is served with Scott’s signature sauces and personal flair. Reservations are not necessary, but it never hurts to call just in case they may be booked for a private party or reception.
