513 S. Spring St. Tupelo, MS
This historical marker in Tupelo, Mississippi marks the site of the Battle of King’s Creek, a Civil War skirmish that took place on May 5, 1863. Union soldiers under Colonel Florence Cornyn were attacked by Confederate forces. They fought them off with repeating rifles and then moved to a better position where a second round of fighting broke out.
The Union ultimately won the battle, with Confederate forces taking heavier losses including 81 captured soldiers. The clash was part of General Grant’s larger push to take Vicksburg, which fell to Union forces on July 4, 1863, giving the North control of the Mississippi River.
